Prepare digital downloads¶
Your goal: provide files the customer can open and print, with clear instructions about what they receive.
Make the product type unmistakable¶
Use a digital listing and state clearly in the first image and opening description that no physical item will be posted. Distinguish an instant download from a personalised file that you will prepare after the order.
For an instant download, attach the actual files to the Etsy listing. Listing mock-ups are display images, not the print files the buyer is purchasing.
Prepare and check the files¶
Export from your best-quality original. Name files by design and ratio or size, such as coastal-print-4x5.jpg, and include a short print guide if it helps your buyer.
For each file, check:
- Pixel dimensions and intended print sizes.
- Edges, text and important details after any crop or resizing.
- Whether the file opens correctly after downloading.
- Whether the filename matches its actual shape and content.
At 300 pixels per inch, an 8 × 10 inch print needs 2400 × 3000 pixels. Changing a file's DPI label does not create missing detail.
Check Etsy's upload limits¶
Etsy currently permits up to five files of up to 20 MB each for an instant digital listing. Supported formats include JPG, PNG, PDF and ZIP. Check Etsy's digital-listing instructions before uploading.
Do not promise print sizes you have not checked, or include ratios merely because other shops include them.
Include a simple buyer explanation¶
This is a digital download. No physical print or frame will be posted.
You will receive [describe the exact files and sizes included]. After Etsy confirms payment, use the download link provided by Etsy to access your files.
Print at home, with a local print shop or with an online printing service. Results depend on the printer, paper and settings used.
Usage: [state the permissions you are actually granting].
Replace every bracketed detail before using this example. Explain whether personal or commercial use is permitted; do not rely on the buyer guessing.
