Price your work

Your goal: set prices that cover the order you actually fulfil, including the discounts you intend to offer.

Start with the costs

For physical products, write down the print, frame, packaging and delivery cost for every option. Add the applicable selling and payment fees, and allow for the work involved in handling orders. Digital products still have design time, software costs, fees and customer support to consider.

Do not copy another shop's price without knowing its costs. A poster and a large framed print have very different economics.

Check the whole order

Use this simple worksheet with your own figures:

Item Your calculation
Product price after any sale What the buyer pays for the item
Delivery paid by the buyer Add this to the order income
Production, frame and packaging Subtract the actual supplier costs
Delivery paid by you Subtract the carrier or supplier charge
Etsy and payment-related charges Subtract the charges that apply to the order
Other costs and time Allow for the remaining cost of making the sale
Amount left Check whether this is enough for your business

This is a planning worksheet, not a tax or accounting calculation. Use Etsy's fees page for current charges and your own records for actual costs.

Test your discount

A £30 item in a 20% sale becomes £24 before other charges. Work from the £24 when checking what is left. The customer's discount does not reduce your printer's invoice.

Check the smallest and largest sizes, every frame option, and the destinations you ship to. Pay particular attention to international delivery and orders containing more than one item.

Save a sensible starting setup

Once the figures work, save them in a DraftSprite listing setup. Use separate setups where the products genuinely differ, such as an unframed print, a framed print and a set of three.

Saving a setup is not the same as changing prices on existing Etsy listings. Review any later catalogue-update action separately.

Your next step

  • I have checked each size and finish, including my largest framed option.
  • I know what happens to the amount left during a sale.
  • My delivery settings match the destinations I offer.
  • I have saved the intended prices without assuming existing listings changed.
